Marshall Grant of the Tennessee Two

Tonight I will be attending the event: Up Close & Personal with Marshall Grant of Johnny Cash and The Tennessee Two! I'm so excited for this. It's a once in a lifetime opportunity seeing as how tonight, in Memphis, Mr. Grant will be retiring from music. He will never again do another interview or play for the public. He has said, that at 82 years old, he would like to spend the rest of his time with his family.

Luther Perkins, Johnny Cash, and Marshall Grant in 1955

Grant was the upright bassist in the backing band for Johnny Cash. Not only did he record with Cash from 1954-1980, he was also his tour manager. The two's friendship suffered difficulties and Grant ended up being fired by Cash. Thankfully years later they reconciled.

The event is at The Brooks Museum and is also sponsored by the Memphis Chapter of The Recording Academy (The Grammys, thanks Lucia!!) Tonight there will be a Q&A with Grant and he will also be signing his book, published in October 2006, titled I Was There When It Happened: My Life With Johnny Cash. He will be sharing stories, never before seen photographs and home movies, and playing one final song. I get to be apart of the intimate audience to hear his last song ever played for the public. I can't wait.
